Women’s tennis icon Monica Seles, known for her fierce battles on the court against legends like Steffi Graf, is now facing a daunting challenge in the form of an incurable respiratory disease. The nine-time Grand Slam champion, who survived a horrific stabbing incident by a crazed fan in 1993, has been diagnosed with myasthenia gravis at the age of 52.

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease that can cause a range of symptoms, including drooping eyelids, double vision, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, weakness in the arms and legs, and respiratory issues that can be life-threatening. Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Seles remains determined to fight back, drawing on her resilience and tenacity that have defined her career.

Reflecting on her past struggles and triumphs, Seles sees her battle with myasthenia gravis as another hurdle to overcome. She recalls the various “resets” she has had to make throughout her life, from immigrating to the U.S. as a young teenager to dealing with the pressures of fame and success in the tennis world. The stabbing incident that nearly ended her career also required a significant reset, but Seles ultimately returned to the sport and continued to excel.

In recent years, Seles began experiencing symptoms of myasthenia gravis while playing tennis, such as difficulty focusing on the ball and weakness in her arms. These challenges have forced her to adapt and make adjustments in her daily life. Despite the setbacks, Seles remains determined to tackle this latest obstacle with the same fighting spirit that has carried her through previous hardships.

She encourages others to stay positive and adaptable, reminding them that life is full of unexpected challenges that require us to adjust and keep moving forward. Seles’s story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the human spirit in overcoming even the most daunting obstacles.
