The 64th edition of the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, known as the world’s oldest TV festival, kicked off on Friday with much anticipation. Laurent Puons, the festival’s general manager, shared his insights on what attendees can expect this year.
The festival serves as a platform to celebrate excellence in global television through three main components. Firstly, it is a public festival that encourages interaction with fans. Secondly, it provides a space for European press to promote TV shows. Lastly, it offers networking opportunities for industry professionals and features topical panels as part of the Business Content program.
One of the festival’s highlights is the presence of its royal patron, Prince Albert II of Monaco, who graces both the opening and closing ceremonies. This year, esteemed guests such as Robin Wright, Judith Light, Rachel Griffiths, Jaz Sinclair, and Sope Dirisu will be welcomed at the Grimaldi Forum.
Notable features of this year’s festival include the first female heads of the fiction and factual juries, Judith Light and Mireille Dumas respectively. Additionally, the introduction of the Digital Award aims to honor innovation and creativity in the digital-native talent sphere. The launch of the Young Creator Pitch also adds a fresh element to the festival’s programming.
The Digital Award recipient, Squeezie, a prominent French content creator with a vast YouTube following, is recognized as a leader in the field. As Puons emphasizes, the festival must remain at the forefront of evolving audiovisual landscapes.
Exciting moments at the festival include the presentation of the Crystal Nymph Award to Robin Wright, the Golden Nymph for most promising talent to Jaz Sinclair, and the Crystal Nymph Award for French actor Pierre Arditi. The Business Content program features engaging sessions such as a conversation between executive producer Rola Bauer and Robin Wright, discussing pivotal moments in their careers.
Another anticipated session involves David W. Zucker, chief creative officer of Scott Free, and executive producer Rola Bauer discussing their collaborations on international co-productions. These discussions shed light on their partnership in creating successful series like “The Pillars of the Earth” and “Vikings.”
The festival commenced with the French premiere of “Watson,” a compelling medical show with investigative elements produced by CBS Studios. Starring Morris Chestnut, the show has garnered success in the U.S. and is poised for international acclaim.
As the Monte-Carlo Television Festival unfolds, attendees can expect a diverse range of programming, industry insights, and networking opportunities that celebrate the best in global television.
