Hulu has orchestrated the television reunion of 2026 by reviving the beloved series Malcolm in the Middle with a four-part series titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.

Frankie Muniz steps back into the role of Malcolm, while Bryan Cranston, who has become a major star since the original show ended, reprises his role as Malcolm’s father.

With the series now available for streaming, Watch With Us highlights three reasons why Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair should be your must-watch comedy for April.

Initial streaming numbers from variety.com indicate that the revival has been warmly received by fans.

The revival of Malcolm in the Middle saw several roles being recast. Erik Per Sullivan did not return to his role as Dewey, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark stepping into the role. However, Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, and others returned to reprise their roles.

It’s Fun to See the Cast Together Again After Two Decades

The revival’s main appeal lies in reuniting nearly all the original cast members. While Erik Per Sullivan opted not to return as Dewey, his replacement, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, primarily appears through video calls, which feels limiting for both the character and the actor. Nonetheless, it’s a joy to watch Muniz, Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Justin Berfield, and Christopher Kennedy Masterson bring their characters back to life.

Surprisingly, the family dynamics haven’t changed much over the years. The charm of Malcolm in the Middle lies in its quirky family, and it wouldn’t be the same if they had evolved into conventional personalities. Francis (Masterson) seems poised for fatherhood, yet remains set in his ways. Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) maintain their iconic comedic personas, with Lois’s fiery outbursts and Hal’s whimsy.

Cranston, known for his intense roles in Breaking Bad and Your Honor, returns to his comedic roots as Hal. His talent shines through in both drama and comedy, but his humorous side truly captivates. Hal’s storylines in the revival, including discovering how much Malcolm concealed from his family, showcase Cranston’s comedic flair.

Frankie Muniz gave fans a sneak peek of the revival, sharing a photo with his on-screen brothers Justin Berfield and Chris Masterson via social media.

Without revealing too much, Hal’s journey to overcome depression provides Cranston with the opportunity to deliver a standout dual performance. His portrayal of an exaggerated version of Hal is a comedic highlight of the series. The revival excels whenever Cranston is at the forefront.

While regularly reuniting the Malcolm in the Middle cast may be challenging, Life’s Still Unfair offers Malcolm a potential new sitcom life. Now a father, Malcolm’s narrative shifts towards his daughter Leah (Keeley Karsten), who inherits his ability to break the fourth wall and takes on the role of narrator. Karsten shines in this part, suggesting potential for a more extended series.

Kiana Madeira adds depth as Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan. She complements Malcolm well, with her own intriguing backstory. They would make a compelling parental duo for Leah if the series evolves further. For now, viewers await to see if this is the conclusion of Malcolm in the Middle or a new beginning.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is available for streaming on Hulu.
