Muslim American members of Congress have condemned the “vile, anti-Muslim, and racist” attacks on Zohran Mamdani, a New York Assemblyman who is on track to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination for New York City’s mayoral race.
Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar, Rashida Talib, André Carson, and Lateefah Simon released a statement in defense of Mamdani, who has been the target of racist attacks following his unexpected primary victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The statement from the congressmembers emphasized that the racist smears against Mamdani cannot be ignored, especially in light of the increased violence against elected officials. They highlighted that such attacks contribute to the dehumanization and violence against Muslim Americans.
The group unequivocally rejected the normalization of anti-Muslim hate and fearmongering, calling on elected leaders nationwide to speak out against such bigotry.
The attacks on Mamdani have not only come from conservatives like President Donald Trump, Laura Loomer, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Charlie Kirk but also from Rep. Andy Ogles, who suggested denaturalization proceedings and deportation for the Assemblyman based on a lyric from a rap song Mamdani released in 2017.
The Muslim American congressmembers expressed their dismay at the deeply entrenched Islamophobia and racism in politics, urging for a united front against such hateful rhetoric.
The article also stressed the importance of addressing and condemning these attacks to prevent further harm and discrimination against Muslim Americans.
