Nanette Carter is a renowned artist whose work is currently being showcased at the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey. The exhibition, titled “Nanette Carter: A Question of Balance,” offers a retrospective of her career and showcases her evolution as an artist.

One of the earliest works on display is inspired by Chinua Achebe’s novel “Things Fall Apart,” where Carter created a piece that reflects her own storytelling. Growing up in Montclair, New Jersey, Carter has deep roots in the community, with her father being the town’s first Black city councilor and later mayor. This connection to her hometown is evident in her art, which often explores themes of identity, culture, and history.

Carter’s early works, created in her childhood bedroom turned studio, feature elements like eggs and baskets, symbolizing balance and fragility. Over the years, her art has evolved to incorporate influences from her artist circle, the East End artists group, and her mentor Al Loving. She embraces abstraction, pushing boundaries within the Black American art community that often favored figurative styles.

Her series “Illuminations” and “Containment” showcase her use of light and form to create vibrant and dynamic compositions. As she explores different materials and techniques, Carter’s art continues to evolve, culminating in her “Bouquet for Loving” series, a tribute to her mentor Al Loving. These works exude warmth and emotion, inviting viewers to engage with the art on a personal level.

In her most recent series, “Afro Sentinels III,” Carter draws inspiration from African historical art, creating totemic figures that symbolize protection and strength. These works reflect Carter’s deep sense of optimism and resilience in the face of adversity, echoing the themes of balance and harmony that run throughout her art.

“Nanette Carter: A Question of Balance” is a celebration of Carter’s artistic journey and her ability to blend disparate elements into a cohesive whole. The exhibition, curated by Mary Birmingham, is a testament to Carter’s talent and vision, inviting viewers to explore the complex layers of her work.

To experience the artistry of Nanette Carter firsthand, visit the Montclair Art Museum before the exhibition closes on July 6. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a masterful artist at work and immerse yourself in the world of “A Question of Balance.”
