BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Over two centuries ago, the S.S. Savannah embarked on a groundbreaking journey across the Atlantic, setting the stage for American maritime history. This audacious crossing signified the dawn of the United States as a formidable maritime power. From that inaugural voyage to the critical shipping routes of our era, the backbone of America’s naval prowess has consistently been the United States Merchant Marine, alongside the dedicated merchant mariners whose efforts bolster our economy and national security during both peacetime and conflict.

Merchant mariners are indispensable to our national defense, poised to assist military operations whenever necessary. As civilian seafarers, they skillfully navigate perilous waters to deliver troops, weaponry, and essential supplies, thereby sustaining our Armed Forces during times of war. During World War II, over 243,000 merchant mariners bravely ventured into harm’s way to support the war effort, incurring a casualty rate that surpassed that of all branches of the U.S. military. Their valor and dedication embody a profound allegiance to our nation, a legacy that we honor and remember with the utmost respect.

Beyond their crucial role in defense, merchant mariners are vital to the engine of the American economy. They operate the vessels that transport goods, energy, and raw materials to and from our shores, facilitating global trade and linking American producers with international markets. Their contributions are essential to numerous key sectors, including shipping, shipbuilding, logistics, and energy.

The United States takes pride in its maritime heritage, and as President, I am committed to revitalizing our leadership on the high seas. Last month, I signed an Executive Order aimed at Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance, which seeks to stimulate investment in American shipbuilding, eliminate outdated regulations, and enhance training and education for merchant mariners. These reforms are crucial for securing supply chains, safeguarding vital trade routes, and addressing the escalating challenges posed by foreign adversaries.

Today, we honor the men and women of the United States Merchant Marine and all who contribute to our maritime industry. Their unwavering commitment fortifies our national defense, energizes our economy, and perpetuates a proud tradition that has been a cornerstone of our nation since its inception.

The Congress, through a resolution passed on May 20, 1933, designated May 22 each year as “National Maritime Day” to commemorate the S.S. Savannah’s first transoceanic voyage in 1819. This resolution empowers the President to issue an annual proclamation encouraging its observance.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 22, 2025, as National Maritime Day. I urge the citizens of our nation to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and to display the flag of the United States prominently in their homes and communities. I also request that all vessels under the American flag adorn themselves suitably on this occasion.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this
twenty-second day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.

           DONALD J. TRUMP
