When it comes to previewing the NBA season, starting from the bottom and working your way up is always a good approach. In the Eastern Conference, the lottery teams have consistently struggled over the past few seasons, with several teams posting some of the worst records in the league. Last season, four Eastern Conference teams lost at least 57 games, highlighting the overall competitiveness of the conference.

The Detroit Pistons had a particularly rough season, with a 28-game losing streak that earned them the top spot for the worst record in the league. The Charlotte Hornets, Washington Wizards, and Pistons collectively won fewer games than five NBA teams, showcasing the challenges faced by the lower-tier teams in the East.

Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, it seems like the trend of struggling lottery teams in the Eastern Conference may continue. With a strong draft class led by Duke forward Cooper Flagg, several teams are motivated to tank for a high lottery pick. Teams like the Brooklyn Nets and Chicago Bulls have embraced this strategy, setting themselves up for a potential rebuild.

One interesting aspect to consider is the possibility of historically bad records qualifying for the Play-In Tournament. With the competitive imbalance in the East, there is a chance that five teams could end up with 55-loss seasons, despite facing each other frequently.

Taking a closer look at the bottom seven teams in the East, projections indicate that teams like the Washington Wizards, Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, and Toronto Raptors may face challenges in the upcoming season. Each team has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, as well as potential for growth and development.

For the Washington Wizards, a rebuild seems inevitable as they look to bounce back from a disappointing season. The Brooklyn Nets are in a similar position, focusing on acquiring young talent and draft picks to shape their future. The Charlotte Hornets are also in the midst of a rebuild, with a new front office and coaching staff leading the way.

The Chicago Bulls are finally embracing a rebuild after years of mediocrity, while the Detroit Pistons are looking to turn the tide after a string of losing seasons. The Toronto Raptors, on the other hand, are trying to find their footing after a series of roster changes and acquisitions.

Overall, the Eastern Conference is set for an interesting season with several teams vying for a chance to improve their standings. As the season unfolds, it will be intriguing to see how these teams navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
