Disney fans, get ready for a treat! “Disneyland Handcrafted,” a captivating new feature documentary produced and directed by Leslie Iwerks, is set to premiere on Jan. 22 on Disney+ and Disney YouTube. This documentary is a treasure trove of rare archival footage and original audio recordings that provide viewers with an exclusive look into the magic of Walt Disney’s dream and the incredible artistry and determination that went into creating The Happiest Place on Earth.
Disneyland has been a beloved destination for over 70 years, but its iconic status didn’t happen overnight. “Disneyland Handcrafted” delves into the story of how the park evolved into the iconic spot it is today, leading up to its grand opening on July 17, 1955. Through newly discovered materials from the Walt Disney Archives, Iwerks and her team have unearthed forgotten 16mm film reels and audio recordings that offer a glimpse into the tumultuous year preceding the park’s creation, capturing the legacy and nostalgia that surrounded the birth of the Disneyland Resort.
The documentary also features firsthand accounts from the artists, craftsmen, and Imagineers who were instrumental in the park’s creation, providing a behind-the-scenes perspective on the challenges and triumphs they faced along the way.
Leslie Iwerks has a special connection to Disney, being the daughter of former Disney executive Don Iwerks and the granddaughter of Ub Iwerks, the legendary animator and co-creator of Mickey Mouse. Her previous projects include acclaimed documentaries like “The Imagineering Story,” “The Pixar Story,” and “League of Legends: Origins.”
