The sky is a surreal shade of blue, streaked with pixelated patterns as the sun sinks towards the horizon. Tao-Yi sits in a secluded cove, the sound of laughter and the crashing waves of the ocean filling the air. She is here out of habit, dragged by Navin to Zach’s annual New Year’s Eve party. The scene is set for a night of celebration in a virtual utopia called Gaia.

As she sits with a nearly empty beer bottle in hand, feeling the cold glass against her palms, Tao-Yi is approached by Navin, a tall and lean figure offering her another drink. Despite her reluctance, she follows him to help start the bonfire with the rest of the group. The bonfire illuminates the faces of a dozen capstone-educated twenty-somethings, all sharp and witty, living in a world of endless possibilities.

As the flames dance in the pit, Tao-Yi checks her live interface, a countdown to midnight flashing in neon colors. She is surrounded by snippets of her friends’ virtual lives, fleeting moments captured in four-second video clips. Evelyn, her petite friend, approaches her with a playful nudge, noticing Tao-Yi’s quiet demeanor. They chat about Tao-Yi’s new job as an Authenticity Consultant, guiding people back to their true selves in a world obsessed with avatars.

Evelyn teases Tao-Yi about her boss, Griffin, and his penchant for spreading feel-good vibes. The conversation drifts to Zach, the charismatic host of the party, basking in the glow of the bonfire. As Evelyn’s gaze lingers on Zach, Tao-Yi quietly slips away, leaving her friend to admire from afar.
