The University of Idaho students who were tragically murdered by Bryan Kohberger returned home to a chilling scene – their front door wide open and barely hanging on its hinges, just days before they were brutally stabbed to death.

Prior to the shocking quadruple murder, the students had also noticed a suspicious man lurking outside their residence in the weeks leading up to the tragic event.

The unsettling events were revealed in a large collection of documents released by law enforcement after Kohberger was sentenced to life in prison for the killings of Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin in their off-campus Moscow home.

One particularly disturbing incident involved Goncalves informing her roommates that she had seen a strange man watching her when she took her dog outside about a month before the murders on November 13, 2022.

Bethany Funke, one of the surviving roommates, recounted to the police that Goncalves had seen the unknown man positioned above their house to the south.

Goncalves was so troubled by the encounter that she shared it with everyone and even called her roommates to inquire about their return home.

Just nine days before the attack, the roommates returned home to find their front door ajar and hanging loosely on its hinges while the wind blew through, according to the documents. Funke mentioned in her police interview that Kernodle’s father repaired the door.

The documents describe the brutal killings, noting the significant force used.

It remains uncertain if Kohberger was the individual observed outside the residence in the lead-up to the incident or if the strange occurrences were connected to the murders in any way.

The newly disclosed documents shed light on the exhaustive efforts of law enforcement to pursue every lead in the hunt for the killer.

Latest Updates on Bryan Kohberger:

The documents also revealed gruesome details of the vicious killings, including Kernodle sustaining over 50 stab wounds – two of which were to her heart – as she fought against her assailant.

Police discovered Kernodle lying on her back in blood-soaked clothing, with defensive knife wounds on her hand, including a deep cut between her index finger and thumb on her left hand.

The files also outlined how investigators processed the crime scene and pursued leads from individuals who claimed to have interacted with Kohberger on Tinder or spotted him walking along a highway.

The chilling documents were released shortly after Kohberger, who had pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty, received four life sentences for the murders.

During the sentencing, Kohberger declined to provide a motive for his actions, leaving the courtroom and the public to speculate on his reasons for breaking into the home and attacking the victims.

“I share the desire expressed by others to understand the why,” Judge Steven Hippler remarked in court. “But upon reflection, it seems to me, and this is just my own opinion, that by continuing to focus on why, we continue to give Mr. Kohberger relevance, we give him agency, and we give him power.”
