Amid a jubilant crowd outside a Brooklyn detention center, Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were brought in to face federal narco-terrorism charges.
The cheering crowd outside the Brooklyn Detention Center welcomed the couple with chants of “down with the dictator,” “shame on you,” and “dirty scumbag!”
More than 200 opponents, including Venezuelan national Ronny Chirinos, gathered outside the prison, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the ousted dictator. Chirinos, who relocated to New York from Maracay due to Maduro’s regime, expressed his joy at seeing the dictator fall but emphasized that the regime has not yet fallen entirely.
As the crowd outside the prison celebrated, passing cars honked in support and people waved flags, shouting “Finally” and “Viva Venezuela.” Juskeily Matheeus and her 11-year-old son joined in the celebration, with Matheeus declaring, “I am celebrating the fall of Maduro!”
27-year-old Jesus Rodriguez, another Venezuelan in attendance, expressed his gratitude for the actions taken against Maduro and his hope for a better future for his country.
Amid the excitement, a Venezuelan police officer reassured the crowd that Maduro was indeed inside the prison, urging them to go home and be with their families.
Maduro and his wife were apprehended by US forces in a daring military operation in Caracas and brought to New York to face charges of narco-terrorism. They are expected to appear in federal court soon.
