Incumbent Rep. Valerie Foushee is currently leading in the Democratic primary for North Carolina’s 4th Congressional district over challenger Nida Allam as the vote count continues.

This race is being closely watched as a test of whether Democratic voters are seeking a shift in leadership within the party. Foushee is holding a slim lead of just over 1,000 votes with 99% of precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press.

“North Carolina is often labeled as a red state, but we are not truly red,” Allam stated in a recent interview with NPR, stressing the importance of addressing affordability concerns and advocating for working-class individuals. “We are a state where ordinary people want their elected representatives to champion the issues that affect them.”
