Chicago Man Sentenced for Machine Gun Incident Involved in Fatal Shooting

In a turn of events, Gad Hughes, who was sentenced to five years in federal prison for tossing a stolen machine gun from a car during a high-speed chase in 2021, is now facing charges for a fatal shooting that resulted in the death of a 62-year-old man.

During his sentencing for the machine gun incident, Hughes expressed a desire to turn his life around for the sake of his family. However, he is now back in custody after allegedly firing shots into a home, resulting in the tragic death of Ignacio Mendiola.

Surveillance footage captured Hughes firing shots from a minivan into the residence, with one bullet striking Mendiola in the head. Two days later, Mendiola succumbed to his injuries.

Upon apprehending Hughes on the Dan Ryan Expressway, Chicago police discovered 88 bags of heroin valued at $16,500 inside his vehicle. Additionally, evidence from Hughes’ phone revealed searches related to the shooting incident and texts indicating that he was in trouble.

As a result of the new charges and the perceived safety risk, Judge Antara Rivera ordered Hughes to be detained pending further legal proceedings.

Despite Hughes’ previous aspirations to change his ways, his involvement in another violent crime has raised concerns about the potential escalation of his criminal behavior.
