In a recent article by the Wall Street Journal, it was revealed that President Trump has a unique way of showing appreciation to his inner circle of male politicians. Instead of traditional gifts or gestures, Trump opts to gift $145 Florsheim Oxfords to his cabinet members and closest allies. This peculiar gift-giving practice came to light during a meeting in December when Trump bluntly told Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance that they “have shitty shoes.” He then proceeded to consult a catalog, ask for their shoe sizes (Rubio’s being 11.5 and Vance’s being 13), and remarked, “You can tell a lot about a man by his shoe size.”

Following this exchange, both Rubio and Vance reportedly received four pairs of the ill-fitting Florsheim Oxfords from the president. However, as recent photographs have shown, Rubio’s shoes are at least two sizes too big for him. In one photo from January, Rubio can be seen hugging Chuck Schumer, with a noticeable gap at the back of his heel due to the oversized shoes. Another picture from the World Economic Forum in Davos depicts Rubio surrounded by other officials, all wearing well-fitted dress shoes except for Rubio in his conspicuously large Florsheims.

Despite the mismatched footwear, Rubio continues to sport his roomy Florsheim Oxfords at official events, such as when meeting with President Trump on March 3. The gap at the back of Rubio’s heel remains a glaring fashion faux pas, especially when standing next to well-dressed colleagues in properly-fitted shoes.

This sartorial quirk in Trump’s gift-giving habits raises questions about the importance of appearance and style in politics. While some may view the oversized shoes as a minor detail, others may see it as a symbol of the lengths to which male politicians are willing to go to stay in Trump’s inner circle. Whether it’s trading in dignity for ill-fitting dress shoes or enduring fashion faux pas for the sake of political favor, one thing is clear – in the world of politics, even a pair of shoes can carry significant meaning.
