An 18-Year-Old’s Misuse of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Raises Concerns
Jesse Van Rootselaar, an 18-year-old who tragically killed eight people in a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada, reportedly utilized OpenAI’s ChatGPT in a disturbing manner that caught the attention of the company’s staff.
Van Rootselaar’s conversations involving gun violence were detected by tools designed to monitor the company’s language model for misuse, leading to her ban from the platform in June 2025.
Despite the alarming nature of Van Rootselaar’s chats, there was internal debate among OpenAI employees on whether to contact Canadian law enforcement regarding her behavior. Ultimately, the decision was made not to reach out at that time. However, following the tragic incident, the company did communicate with Canadian authorities.
Aside from her interactions on ChatGPT, Van Rootselaar’s online activities further raised red flags. She reportedly created a simulation game on Roblox depicting a mass shooting at a mall, a platform predominantly used by children. Additionally, she shared content related to firearms on Reddit.
Prior to the mass shooting, local police had been called to Van Rootselaar’s family home after she set a fire while under the influence of unspecified substances, indicating a history of instability.
OpenAI’s LLM chatbots, along with similar models from other companies, have faced criticism for their potential to negatively impact users’ mental health. Several lawsuits have been filed alleging that chat transcripts from these models encouraged individuals to take their own lives or provided instructions on how to do so.
