Our Legacy’s Poetic Soul Shines Through in Latest Collection
With his poet’s soul, Cristopher Nying of Our Legacy has a unique ability to find strength in fragility and vulnerability in displays of masculinity. In a world where might often equals right, Nying’s approach offers a refreshing perspective.
Recently receiving investment from LVMH, Our Legacy chose to showcase their latest collection in Paris, a nod to their roots. This collection, deeply rooted in the Swedish psyche, focuses on function and melancholy. The brand’s pursuit of “garments reduced to their most honest, prototypical form” is evident in their latest designs, inspired by authentic Swedish workwear such as machinist jackets.
Nying explained, “Normally, I’ve been tweaking workwear in our way, but this time I actually went into the original garments.” The result is a collection of clothes that are far from standard issue, with a focus on authenticity and functionality.
Some pieces in the collection are direct interpretations of archival workwear, paying homage to their functional origins. For example, a pair of chinos made of khaki fabric that lightens with each wash, and a tailored car coat featuring vintage wool with a modern twist. The team’s innovative approach extends to a reversible MA-1 jacket insulated with a recyclable filling made from factory scraps.
Alongside the purpose-built garments are more poetic pieces, incorporating floral prints, self-tie rosettes, and raw edges in light and transparent materials. These elements are complemented by sturdy leathers, luxe suedes, and metallic denim, creating a collection that exudes a sense of sorrow and romance.
“It’s tragic and romantic,” Nying describes the mood of the collection. The models’ gestures, grasping their fringed mantles protectively, reflect a sense of quiet reverence. Nying’s upbringing in Sweden’s Bible belt influenced his design choices, recalling the tradition of covering shoulders in church as a sign of respect.
In a world filled with noise, Nying’s collection offers a moment of soft power. “I think there’s a heavy noise in fashion and in the world generally,” he reflects. Our Legacy’s latest collection serves as a master class in understated elegance and thoughtful design.
