An arrest has been made in California linked to the catastrophic Palisades Fire.

“We are here to announce the arrest of 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht, who faces charges of intentionally igniting the blaze that escalated into the Palisades Fire in January,” stated Bill Essayli, the acting U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, in a post shared via X on October 8. “The allegation is that Rinderknecht initiated a fire in Pacific Palisades on New Year’s Day—eventually leading to one of the most devastating wildfires in Los Angeles history, resulting in fatalities and vast damage.”

At a press conference on Wednesday, officials indicated that Rinderknecht was responsible for starting the Lachman Fire on January 1 in the Pacific Palisades area.

Initially confined to less than eight acres without causing structural damage, investigators suspect that fierce Santa Ana winds on January 7 may have reawakened the embers and sparked the larger Palisades Fire.

The Palisades Fire consumed over 23,000 acres in areas such as Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and the Santa Monica mountains, achieving full containment by January 31.

According to Cal Fire, 12 lives were lost and more than 6,800 structures were devastated.

Essayli noted that investigators gathered a range of evidence against Rinderknecht, including “an image he created on ChatGPT representing a burning city.”

“Though we cannot reverse the harm caused, we hope Rinderknecht’s arrest and the charges filed against him provide some sense of justice for the victims of this tragic event,” Essayli expressed via X.

During the press briefing, officials disclosed that the suspect was an Uber driver residing in Pacific Palisades at the time of the fire.

After completing a passenger drop-off on New Year’s Eve, he is said to have ascended a nearby trail, recording videos on his iPhone before reportedly setting the fire 12 minutes into the year, according to officials.

“It reportedly took the defendant several attempts to call 911 to report the blaze,” Essayli commented in the press conference, per CNN. “He left the scene but turned back after seeing fire trucks heading toward the blaze.”

Rinderknecht was expected to appear in court on Wednesday, though it’s unknown if he has secured legal representation.

The Palisades Fire not only caused the destruction of schools, churches, and businesses, but it also led to the loss of homes belonging to numerous celebrities.

“We are grateful to have our health and our children,” Montag shared in a tearful video on Instagram on January 9 following the fire’s destruction of her home. “Trying to stay focused on gratitude, even though it hits us in waves.”

Pratt remarked, “While our house burned down, one beautiful reminder came from the shape of our son’s bed, which appeared as a heart. It reflected the love within our home and all the treasured moments we’ve shared as a family.”
