Paul McCartney Criticizes ‘Talentless Influencers’ in New Rant

Reflecting on the evolution of celebrity culture since the Beatlemania of the 1960s, Paul McCartney shared his thoughts on the shift from musicians and film stars to today’s viral personalities and social media fame. He expressed discomfort with the current fan culture and mentioned his growing reluctance to take selfies with fans in public.

A source close to McCartney revealed that he finds it difficult to comprehend how internet fame can overshadow traditional artistic achievements. The insider noted, “Paul comes from a generation where fame was earned through years of hard work, touring, songwriting, and proving oneself creatively. He finds it odd that people can now achieve global celebrity status through algorithms, viral videos, or simply sharing their daily lives online.”

Another source added, “He’s not criticizing young people personally, but he believes modern fame often values visibility over talent. He also understands that the world has changed, and every older generation eventually reaches a point where popular culture no longer makes sense to them.”

When asked about what confuses him most about today’s world, McCartney admitted that the influencer culture is baffling to him. “I think a lot of this influencer stuff – I just don’t really get it, because I’m not that generation,” he explained.

He elaborated, “But I see it, you can’t help it. My wife will be looking at Instagram and showing me something, and then one of those will come on.”

McCartney remarked that it is amusing how people without apparent talent can become extremely famous, gathering billions of hits and views.

He also joked that criticizing influencers might make him seem outdated, stating, “You’ve got to be careful about talking about that, because it makes you sound very old-fashioned. Which I am.”

Paul McCartney, the songwriter of “Hey Jude,” also reflected on how attitudes towards fame have changed significantly since the height of Beatlemania. He observed that younger stars today often express concerns about the pressures of fame, which was less common in his generation.

He remarked, “I think the big difference is in yourself. When you’re first famous, you love it – because it’s what you were trying to achieve.”

McCartney recalled the excitement of being recognized by people on the street and how much he and his peers enjoyed it. “There was none of this, ‘Oh, people are bothering me’ – that’s a modern affliction. We loved it. And you learn to deal with it,” he added.

Paul McCartney also shared why he increasingly declines to take photos with fans, despite being one of the most recognizable musicians for over six decades. He explained, “I say I don’t like to do it because something important to me, something related to your question about innocence and staying normal, would be lost. The minute I start thinking I’m something above myself, I won’t like me.”

He emphasized the importance of staying true to himself, saying, “It’s very important for me to just be me. So I say to people, ‘I don’t want to do photos.’ And they say: ‘Why?’ And I say, ‘I’ll tell you what…’ and I go into this long explanation about how, down on the south coast of France in Saint-Tropez, there’s a man on the beachfront who has a monkey, and you pay to have your photo taken with the monkey.”

“I really do not want to feel like that monkey. And when I take a picture with someone, I do feel like him. I’m not me anymore – I’m suddenly something else,” he concluded.
