As spring unfolds, thoughts naturally turn to personal spaces, the warmth of home, and the joy of dressing for oneself—a true luxury of choice, even when some outcomes might not be so subtle.

Count Paula Canovas del Vas among the designers embracing this spirit. Her creations are designed for excitement and boldness, yet this unique Paris season posed a pivotal challenge for her—like many emerging designers—regarding how to stand out amidst the overwhelming buzz.

“It was definitely a challenge,” the designer reflected before her show. “We concluded that our approach should be mobile, allowing us to capture images in various locations around the city. That aspect is very public. But we also asked ourselves, ‘What can we create that contrasts with the public sphere? How do we present a more personal setting?’”

In true Canovas fashion, an inventive solution emerged. She and her team transformed a dropside truck into an unexpected white-tiled bathroom, strategically placing it in front of the bustling Café de la Mairie, a favored locale in the Upper Marais. Amid the throng of spectators and a sea of smartphones, models displayed their spring collection by engaging in typically private activities—such as brushing their teeth, perching on a (closed) toilet, and preparing to step into the world.

Among her offerings, a striking black top featuring ruffled shoulders paired with matching trousers showcased a rare monochrome aesthetic, strengthening the overall collection. New denim finishes—ranging from washed to laser-treated and embroidered—were interspersed with vibrant clashes of color, various materials, abstract florals, and reimagined knits. Notably, the pompom pieces, crafted from painstakingly hand-cut strips of jersey layered into voluminous statement designs, required two solid months for completion, as per the designer’s account.

Canovas enjoys a loyal following in footwear, and this season, she reworked the classic Converse Chuck 70 and Chuck Taylor All Star XXHi, adorning them with 3D floral designs and herringbone patterns. The Diablo line also expanded, introducing two new styles: a chic flat sandal and a laced sneaker variant.

“We are undeniably existing in a time of contrasts,” the designer expressed. “These garments are reflections of a divided world.” However, amid the vibrancy, she also presented more straightforward, wearable options, such as the striped skirts, which may appeal even to those less inclined toward clashing styles.
