Authorities have responded to the discovery of a bone near the residence of Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, Nancy Guthrie, who is missing.
A spokesperson from the Tucson Police Department informed People that a human bone was located on Thursday, May 7, approximately seven miles from Nancy’s home. The investigation concluded that the bone pertains to a “prehistoric anthropological investigation” and is not linked to any criminal activity.
The University of Arizona Department of Anthropology and the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner collaborated with the police in examining the bone.
Nancy, aged 84, has been missing since February, last seen by her family on January 31. The Pima County police have been diligently investigating her disappearance, which is approaching the 100-day mark.
The FBI has become involved in the investigation. Shortly after their involvement, they released images from Nancy’s doorbell security camera, showing a man wearing a ski mask on her porch the morning she vanished. Despite this potential lead, no suspect has been identified.
Savannah took a two-month break from the Today show to join her siblings, Camron and Annie Guthrie, in the search. They have appealed to the public for assistance, offering a $1 million reward for information leading to their mother’s recovery.
Before returning to work, Savannah spoke with Hoda Kotb about the emotional impact of her mother’s disappearance.
“Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony,” Savannah expressed in March. “Thinking about what she endured keeps me up every night. In the darkness, I imagine her terror. It is unthinkable.”
Savannah also shared her guilt, wondering if her public figure status contributed to Nancy’s disappearance.

“It’s overwhelming to think I might have contributed to this,” she told Kotb. “I feel the need to apologize to my mother, my sister, my brother, my kids, my nephew, and Tommy, my brother-in-law,” Savannah continued. “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry. If it is me, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.”
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office has reaffirmed its commitment to finding Nancy as the investigation progresses.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation, and we are working closely with the FBI,” the police stated to Us Weekly on Monday, May 4. “DNA and video analysis are in progress, supported by laboratories nationwide. Advances in technology are aiding our efforts, and tips are continually being received and reviewed.”
