For over two and a half centuries, America’s working dogs have stood as steadfast guardians of our freedom, offering not only security but also companionship to the brave men and women who serve in our armed forces. On this National K-9 Veterans Day, we take a moment to honor these extraordinary canines for their indispensable contributions to the safety and strength of our nation.

It all began on March 13, 1942, when the United States Army inaugurated its War Dog Program during World War II by establishing the Army K-9 Corps. Since that pivotal moment, Military Working Dogs have accompanied our troops to every significant conflict, proving themselves as integral players in operations across land, sea, and air.

To achieve the esteemed title of Military Working Dog, candidates must undergo a grueling training regimen and thorough evaluation, specializing in vital areas such as drug and explosive detection, security operations, and search-and-rescue missions. Their remarkable intelligence, speed, temperament, acute olfactory senses, and unwavering determination allow these elite canines to thrive in high-pressure environments. This innate ability is complemented by the profound bond they share with their human handlers—built on trust, loyalty, and mutual respect.

From the loyal companion of General George Washington during the tumultuous Revolutionary War to Chips, the war hero of World War II who bravely charged enemy positions in Sicily, to Conan, the Belgian Malinois who played a crucial role in the operation against ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, dogs have consistently been woven into the fabric of American military history. Today, around 1,600 working dogs operate alongside their human partners in combat zones, protecting our borders and serving in various capacities around the globe.

Beyond the military, dogs have also made significant contributions to local and federal law enforcement. Earlier this year, a remarkable police canine named Bo from Gastonia, North Carolina, heroically located a missing 13-year-old boy with special needs amid a snowstorm. For generations, Bo and countless other police dogs have exhibited bravery and dedication, enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement and bolstering our nation’s security efforts.

These dogs are not merely loyal companions; they actively defend our liberties as well. Today, I join a grateful nation in recognizing the enduring legacy, astonishing acts of bravery, and invaluable contributions of America’s highly skilled four-legged warriors. As we navigate this new Golden Age of America, the loyalty, courage, and fighting spirit they embody serve as an inspiration, reminding us of the unwavering commitment to freedom and safety that defines our nation.
