Today, and throughout March, I stand with the Irish American community and all Americans to honor the enduring relationship between our nations and to celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Saint Patrick. As the patron Saint of Ireland, he remains a symbol of faith, courage, and resilience.
Saint Patrick, born in the fourth century, dedicated his life to traversing the rugged landscapes of medieval Ireland, spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Celtic people. Despite facing constant persecution, imprisonment, and even attempts on his life, he boldly ventured into uncharted territories to share the truth. Tradition tells us that, during 40 days of prayer and fasting on a mountaintop, he drove all serpents and demons from the Emerald Isle and used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to pagans, igniting countless hearts with his message.
Even today, Saint Patrick’s legacy endures globally as a heroic Christian figure and a testament to the power of prayer and the strength of the Irish spirit. In the 19th and 20th centuries, millions of Irish immigrants brought his faith and missionary zeal to America. Inspired by his example, many churches, hospitals, schools, and charities across the United States bear his name, including the magnificent Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. Each March, in his honor, hundreds of thousands of Americans fill cities and towns, celebrating Irish heritage with a sea of green.
As we mark 250 years of American independence, we also recognize the significant contributions of Irish Americans to our national story. From the initial battles of the Revolutionary War at Lexington and Concord, Irish-born soldiers joined the Patriots to fight for our independence and freedom. It is popularly believed that as much as half of the Continental Army consisted of the Sons of Ireland. Figures like John Barry, Hercules Mulligan, President Andrew Jackson, and Audie Murphy, with their Irish roots, have greatly enriched our culture and strengthened our nation.
This Saint Patrick’s Day and throughout Irish American Heritage Month, we extend our warmest wishes to all Americans celebrating Ireland’s patron Saint. We honor the generations of Irish American heroes who have kept his legacy alive and elevated our nation to new heights. Above all, we commit to maintaining our strong, vibrant, and flourishing friendship with the Republic of Ireland and the entire island for years to come.
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
