For 250 years, America has championed the potential of its people, grounded in hope, hard work, and the promise that individuals can grow from their mistakes and pursue a purposeful future. This Second Chance Month, my Administration is dedicated to promoting redemption pathways, fostering safer communities, and ensuring those who take responsibility and aim to rebuild their lives have the opportunity to succeed.
During my first term, I signed the First Step Act into law, implementing significant criminal justice reforms to alleviate harsh sentencing for nonviolent offenders, reduce recidivism, and offer second chances to those reentering society. Upon returning to office, I appointed a White House Pardon Czar for the first time to guide our clemency initiatives, emphasizing both opportunity and accountability. Ensuring community safety remains my top priority in every pardon recommendation. However, America’s history is rich with individuals who have genuinely transformed and earned a second chance. We are committed to providing these individuals with the opportunity to rebuild their lives, supported by resources like faith-based guidance, mental health care, and access to well-paying jobs, enabling them to make positive choices, contribute to their communities, and create a brighter future.
This month, we reaffirm that our Nation’s strength lies in transformation and renewal. Together, we will uphold justice, defend the rule of law, and extend the blessings of freedom and opportunity to every citizen who strives for them.
