BAFTA Suspends Noel Clarke’s Outstanding Contribution Award Amid Allegations

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards has taken action against actor Noel Clarke in light of multiple accusations of groping, harassment, and bullying. Clarke’s outstanding contribution award has been suspended, and his membership has been put on hold “until further notice.”

These allegations first came to light in a series of articles published by The Guardian in 2021, where it was claimed that Clarke had abused his power in the industry to prey on women. Following the publication of these articles, Clarke filed a libel case against the newspaper, but in August, a judge ruled in favor of The Guardian, stating that the content of the articles was “substantially true.”

Clarke had initially included BAFTA and several individuals as defendants in his legal battle, but he later dropped them from the case, choosing to focus solely on The Guardian. In September 2022, he explained his decision, stating that the article was the main source of the issues he faced.

“The article is the cause of everything. Everything that happened in my life, in my career, in my world, everything, it stems from the article, so for me, there was no point in going after everyone else when actually that was the main source,” Clarke said.

BAFTA’s decision to suspend Clarke’s award and membership reflects the organization’s commitment to addressing allegations of misconduct within the industry. The move sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated, even from individuals who have been recognized for their contributions to film and television.
