Ramy Yousef, the co-creator of Prime Video’s “#1 Happy Family USA,” delved into the music creation process by exploring Egyptian and Lebanese music for the show’s opening track. The adult animated sitcom follows a Muslim family in New Jersey during the events of September 11, 2001, with Yousef voicing the characters of Rumi, the teen son, and Hussein, the father who owns a halal food cart.
While traveling around the country, Yousef recorded voiceovers for the show and found himself picking up a guitar to create music for Hussein. The character’s anxious and intense nature inspired Yousef to explore a vulnerable side through music. One of the first songs he created was “Money for the Meat,” a ballad that reflects the struggles of running a halal cart.
Collaborating with composer Moez Dawad, who was based in Egypt, Yousef drew inspiration from his personal experiences in New York. Memories of late-night visits to halal carts and interactions with customers influenced the lyrics and melodies of the songs. The creative process involved spontaneous brainstorming sessions and freestyle music-making, reflecting the duo’s long-standing friendship.
The show’s main title song, centered around the family’s transformation and acceptance, was a collaborative effort between Yousef and Dawad. The lyrics and music capture the essence of belonging and self-acceptance, mirroring the characters’ journey. For Rumi’s voice, Yousef turned to childhood videos for inspiration, discovering a whispery and raspy tone that perfectly suited the character.
The music for “#1 Happy Family USA” is a blend of cultural influences, personal experiences, and creative spontaneity. From the heartfelt ballads to the catchy main title track, each song adds depth and emotion to the show’s narrative. The collaboration between Yousef and Dawad resulted in a soundtrack that complements the quirky and heartfelt moments of the series, making it a memorable musical experience for viewers.
