The world is still reeling from the loss of actor Eric Dane, known for his roles in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” who passed away on February 19 at the age of 53 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His wife, Rebecca Gayheart Dane, is now speaking out for the first time since his death in support of a charitable initiative that was deeply important to the actor.

In the final weeks of his life, Dane participated in a voice restoration project spearheaded by AI firm ElevenLabs. This project aimed to restore his ability to communicate using a synthetic voice created from past recordings of Dane’s voice. It was also a way for Dane to leave behind a piece of himself for his daughters, Billie and Georgia, aged 16 and 14, respectively.

Gayheart Dane recalls how Dane was excited about the project as he was losing his voice, making communication increasingly difficult for him each day. The moment when they heard the recreated voice was emotional for both of them, with Dane becoming visibly moved and Gayheart Dane shedding tears.

ElevenLabs has committed to providing a lifetime software license and support services for free to individuals suffering from terminal neurological diseases like ALS. The company offers a wide database of licensed voices that can be accessed through an AI platform, with services valued at $1 billion to help 1 million people.

To raise awareness about their cause, ElevenLabs has produced a series of 11 documentary shorts titled “11 Voices,” showcasing individuals who have benefited from their technology. Dane was supposed to be one of the people profiled in the series, but his deteriorating health prevented filming. The series is set to debut at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, on March 13, and Gayheart Dane will participate in a panel session connected to the premiere that was originally planned for Dane.

Gayheart Dane expresses gratitude for the outpouring of support her family has received since Dane’s diagnosis in 2024 and his subsequent passing. She acknowledges the kindness and generosity of the entertainment community and the Hollywood industry, which has helped her and her daughters through this challenging time.

ElevenLabs’ AI system is designed to capture the essence of a person’s natural speaking voice from existing recordings, providing a close approximation that will be groundbreaking for families affected by ALS and other debilitating illnesses. Mati Staniszewski, cofounder of ElevenLabs, emphasizes the importance of using AI tools to restore a person’s identity and unique voice, showcasing the positive impact of technology for good.

The voice restoration project that Dane participated in is a testament to the power of technology to preserve a person’s essence and help them communicate with their loved ones even after losing their voice. Gayheart Dane’s support for this initiative is a fitting tribute to her late husband’s legacy and his advocacy for those affected by ALS. Voice restoration technology has been a game-changer for many individuals who have lost their ability to speak. One such individual was actor Eric Dane, who, before his passing, was able to utilize ElevenLabs voice system to preserve his voice for future use. His wife, Gayheart Dane, shared how their daughters were amazed by the accuracy of the voice archive, capturing his unique way of speaking perfectly.

The significance of having access to this technology was not lost on Eric Dane, given his legacy as an actor and storyteller. As his speech abilities declined due to his illness, he understood the impact of losing his voice and the importance of having it restored. He believed in the power of giving someone back their voice and wanted to ensure that as many people as possible could benefit from this technology.

ElevenLabs has been at the forefront of voice restoration technology, engaging in partnerships with actors, family estates, and even securing an AI agreement with SAG-AFTRA to address copyright concerns in the industry. Gayheart Dane expressed her admiration for the company’s efforts in providing realistic and personalized voice restoration solutions for those who have experienced voice loss.

The impact of losing one’s voice goes beyond communication – it is a fundamental part of a person’s identity. Voice restoration technology not only helps individuals regain their ability to speak but also restores a sense of self and empowerment. Through initiatives like 11 Voices, Eric Dane’s vision of giving a million people their voices back lives on, bringing hope and healing to those in need.

As we continue to witness advancements in technology, it is crucial to recognize the profound impact it can have on individuals facing challenges such as voice loss. By embracing innovative solutions like voice restoration technology, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be heard and share their stories with the world.
