“I do think it’s one or the other to me,” Merloni stated. “When I start hearing noise about the Red Sox turning their attention to Bo Bichette, all that is saying is, ‘Alex, accept the deal we have on the table.’ Like, it’s media games, it’s trying to get Bregman, trying to get Boras to accept what the Red Sox have out there. If not, we’re gonna move on to Bo Bichette. I think it’s an option. There’s no question about it.”
Meanwhile, Bo Bichette’s free agency status remains uncertain as no team has met his contract demands, according to MLB insider Jeff Passan. Bichette, along with other notable free agents like Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger, is still searching for the right deal. Passan suggests that Bichette may opt for a shorter-term, opt-out-heavy contract similar to what has worked for other players in the past.
“At this point, it’s reasonable to think at least one will slip between the cracks and go for a shorter-term, opt-out-heavy deal we’ve seen work for Pete Alonso, Matt Chapman, and, for pitchers, Blake Snell. If that sort of deal would work for anyone, it might be Bichette, who could have a big year, show he’s healthy, and hit the market again at 28 years old.”
While the Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly keen on re-signing Bichette, they have also been linked with the possibility of adding Alex Bregman as a backup option. The offseason drama continues to unfold as teams jockey for position in the competitive free agent market.
