Ronald van der Kemp is a designer who stands out in the couture world for his unconventional and campy approach to fashion. While most couture shows are known for their extravagant budgets and luxurious displays, van der Kemp takes a different route by using surplus and vintage couture fabrics, as well as leather and exotic skin remnants, in his collections. In fact, 98 percent of his latest collection was made from existing materials, showcasing his commitment to sustainability.

Van der Kemp’s latest collection, titled “We Are the World,” was presented in a photography studio reminiscent of Richard Avedon’s iconic work. The designer himself was present at the center of the space, directing the models and taking photographs of them as they posed in exaggerated and caricature-like positions. The entire presentation had a meta aspect to it, with van der Kemp recording the activity on his Ray-Ban Meta sunglasses and occasionally breaking the fourth wall.

The collection featured flamboyant color mixing and fabric collaging, staying true to van der Kemp’s signature style. This time, however, he incorporated 3D printing on textiles, giving the creations a retro-futuristic vibe. Red carpet-worthy pieces included a high-neck cropped top paired with a floor-length skirt in black mohair and silk, as well as a beaded bra with a puffed skirt that exuded a bold and playful vibe.

Despite the whimsical and playful nature of the collection, van der Kemp clarified that he wasn’t trying to make a political statement. Instead, he viewed his designs as intuitive expressions of creativity and optimism in a world that can often feel bleak. The show reached a peak of eccentricity with a painted canvas dress accessorized with a mini mannequin torso in gold, and a model playing a clarinet while wearing a candy-colored plissé mini-dress.

In the end, the finale of the show may have been a bit over-the-top, but van der Kemp’s unique vision and dedication to sustainable fashion will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression. Fashion lovers can expect more unexpected and eye-catching creations from this innovative designer in the future.
