Battery storage plays a crucial role in the integration of renewable energy into the grid, providing energy resiliency during natural disasters and advancing environmental justice by replacing dirtier peaker plants commonly located in low-income and communities of color. However, concerns have been raised about the safety of large-scale battery storage systems, particularly those with lithium-ion batteries, due to incidents of fires and explosions. Despite these alarming stories, the safety of battery storage systems has significantly improved in recent years, with a drastic drop in failure rates.

Safety features are integral to the design of battery storage systems, with measures implemented at various levels including cell, module, and enclosure levels. These features help prevent thermal runaway and ensure the safe operation of the system. Additionally, system integration and battery management systems play a crucial role in monitoring and maintaining the system under normal conditions.

Codes and standards, such as NFPA 855 and the International Fire Code, govern the safety of battery storage systems, addressing fire safety and explosion prevention. While these codes are continuously updated to reflect best practices, there is room for improvement in areas such as early detection of battery failure. Fire department preparedness is also essential, as battery fires present unique challenges that require specialized training and response protocols.

Siting of battery storage facilities is a critical consideration, with a lack of local regulations governing their placement. It is important for local governments to adopt ordinances that address battery storage siting to ensure safety and community engagement. Environmental justice communities should be actively involved in the siting process to prevent further burdening these communities with polluting energy infrastructure.

Overall, battery storage is vital for the transition to renewable energy and must be implemented in a safe and equitable manner. By prioritizing safety features, adherence to codes and standards, fire department preparedness, and community engagement in the siting process, we can ensure that battery storage systems contribute to a cleaner, more resilient energy grid while addressing environmental justice concerns.
