Scandi Alliance Secures Production Commitment for Historical Epic “Royal Blood”

One of Scandinavia’s most ambitious TV drama series, the historical epic “Royal Blood” from Fremantle’s Nordic powerhouse Miso Film, has officially secured a production commitment from the Scandi Alliance of TV2 Norway, TV4 Sweden, and TV 2 Denmark. The budget for the six-part series has been confirmed at €15 million ($17.8 million), making it a substantial investment for the Scandinavian market. Fremantle will handle international distribution, with production expected to begin in early 2027.

Leading the project as the director is Norway’s Erik Richter Strand, known for his work on acclaimed dramas such as “The Crown,” “I Fought The Law,” and “Occupied.” The announcement of the production greenlight and Richter Strand’s involvement was made by TV2 Norway drama head Alice Sommer at the Göteborg Film Festival’s TV Drama Vision conference on Jan. 27, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development.

Originally introduced at TV Drama Vision as the Scandi Alliance’s first joint drama venture, “Royal Blood” was selected from 75 Scandinavian submissions and set up at Miso Film Norway. The series will explore the power struggles between the Scandinavian royal houses during the years 1807-14, against the backdrop of Napoleon’s challenge to Europe’s great powers. Characters from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden will navigate personal desires, loyalties, identities, and ambitions in a world where every decision carries national consequences.

The creative team behind “Royal Blood” includes Nanna Westh, Erik Richter Strand, Monica Boracco, and Katarina Launing, with Westh and Richter Strand serving as head writers. The series is a collaborative effort between TV2 Norway, TV4 Sweden, and TV2 Denmark, produced by Miso Film Norway, Miso Film Denmark, and Miso Film Sweden. Executive producers include Peter Bose, Jonas Allen, Christian Rank, Are Heidenstrøm, and Richter Strand.

Alice Sommer, TV2 Norway drama head, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “‘Royal Blood’ is a truly epic undertaking that explores how power, loyalty, and personal ambition collide at a pivotal moment in Scandinavian history. This is a story that belongs to all of us – Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. ‘Royal Blood’ captures a defining moment when our nations’ fates were intertwined in ways that still shape who we are today.”

Miso Film producer Kristin Ulseth added, “‘Royal Blood’ is about how power really works and how alliances are built and broken, and how the fate of entire nations can hinge on very human choices. At its heart, it’s driven by fear, pride, vulnerability, and courage, where even small decisions can have huge consequences. With Erik Richter Strand attached and his experience on ‘The Crown,’ we feel confident that ‘Royal Blood’ will have scale and intimacy in a cinematic and deeply relatable way.”
