Engineered stone countertops have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their durability, affordability, and customizable options. Made to resemble natural stone like marble or granite, these countertops offer a sleek and modern look for any kitchen or bathroom. However, beneath the surface lies a hidden danger for workers in the fabrication industry.

A recent study conducted by a team of scientists at Georgia Tech has shed light on the safety risks associated with engineered stone fabrication. The research focused on the exposure of workers to respirable crystalline silica, a hazardous material found in the dust produced during the fabrication process. Unlike natural stone, which contains a lower concentration of silica, engineered stone can contain over 90% silica, making it much more dangerous to work with.

The study identified four risk groups within the engineered stone fabrication industry and recommended measures to protect workers from exposure. These measures include wearing respirators, implementing air quality monitoring, and providing proper training on safety protocols. While personal protective equipment is important, it is not a foolproof solution. Employers must take a comprehensive approach to ensure the safety of their workers.

For Jenny Houlroyd, manager of occupational health services at Georgia Tech, worker safety is a personal mission. Having lost her father to workplace contaminants, she understands the importance of protecting workers from hazardous materials. She emphasizes the need for consumers to educate themselves on the risks associated with engineered stone and choose safer alternatives for their countertops.

In light of the study’s findings, the researchers recommend that the U.S. follow Australia’s lead in banning the import and fabrication of engineered stone until safer alternatives can be developed. Ultimately, the goal is to eliminate the risks associated with working with this toxic material and protect the health of workers in the fabrication industry.

Overall, the research conducted by the Georgia Tech team highlights the importance of prioritizing worker safety in industries where hazardous materials are present. By raising awareness of the risks and implementing proactive measures, we can create a safer working environment for all.
