Secuoya Studios is set to receive the MIP SDG Award for its dedication to sustainable production practices, with the award ceremony taking place at Mipcom in Cannes, the preeminent global market for television and streaming content, scheduled for Oct. 13-16. This honor is presented in collaboration with the United Nations.
Launched in 2020, the award acknowledges the television industry’s potential to enhance progress towards the United Nationsâ Sustainable Development Goals through impactful editorial strategy, advocacy, and business operations. Past winners include notable entities like A+E Networks, Junk Kouture, Open Planet, Sky, Studio Silverback, and the educational platform Ubongo from Africa.
This award highlights Secuoya Studiosâ commitment to environmental stewardship in production, stemming from its extensive experience with large-scale Spanish productions, including “Montecristo” and “Zorro,” and has broadened its efforts across various projects, such as the recent co-production “Shades” (Matices) with Stellarmedia, which debuted on SkyShowtime this year, along with the newly announced “The Tribute” (El Homenaje).
The accolade will be presented by Caroline Petit, the United Nationsâ deputy director for the United Nations Regional Information Centre for Europe, during the MIP Creative Hub session on Oct. 15, which will showcase practical insights from initiatives like:
• The launch of the Secuoya Foundationâs open access Sustainable Filming Protocol, dubbed Greenbook, developed in collaboration with Mrs. Greenfilm eco-management consultancy. This extensive guide, with over 120 guidelines, has been embraced by all of the studioâs productions since its introduction in 2022.
• The creation of the Sustainable Management Seal in cooperation with TĂV SĂD, marking the first audited sustainability certification in the audiovisual sector.
• Establishing an in-house Sustainability in Production department at Secuoya Studios, which includes appointing an eco manager for each production. Sustainability principles are also conveyed to future production professionals through Secuoya Studios executives teaching at Core School University.
Petit remarked: âI express my gratitude to Mipcom Cannes for this important annual platform and extend my sincere congratulations to Secuoya Studios for their unwavering dedication to sustainable production. Their efforts represent a growing trend in the industry and draw us and their audiences closer to fulfilling the UNâs Sustainable Development Goals.â
Lucy Smith, the director of Mipcom Cannes, stated: âThe ability of television to create a meaningful impactâboth in front of and behind the cameraâremains crucial. We will persist in using our platform to emphasize this. With respect to sustainable production, Secuoya Studios exemplify how real, measurable actions can mitigate the environmental impact of productions, setting a remarkable standard that we are proud to highlight.â
Brendan Fitzgerald, CEO of Secuoya Studios, commented, âAt Secuoya Studios, sustainability is a core commitment guiding our creative and production processes. It is an ethos rooted in our belief in innovation, technology, and strategic partnerships that foster enduring change. Beyond the recognition itself, this opportunity at Mipcom enables us to illustrate how widely applicable these practices can be.â
