Peter Braunstein, a former fashion magazine writer turned sexual predator, is set to have his first hearing before the state Parole Board in the week of August 18. Braunstein, now 61 years old, gained notoriety for the horrific sexual torture he inflicted on a co-worker he had become obsessed with. On Halloween night in 2005, he set a fire outside the victim’s Chelsea apartment and posed as a fireman to gain access to her home. He then chloroformed, drugged, bound, and sexually assaulted her over a period of more than 13 hours, leaving a mocking note on her mirror before fleeing the scene.

The victim’s name is being withheld, but the details of Braunstein’s depraved actions are well-documented. He videotaped the assault and went on the run after the incident, becoming the most wanted man in America. After a nationwide manhunt, he was finally apprehended at the University of Memphis, where he attempted suicide by stabbing himself in the neck multiple times.

During his trial in 2007, Braunstein was convicted of kidnapping, sexual abuse, robbery, and burglary, and sentenced to 18 years to life in prison. Despite his conviction, Braunstein showed no remorse for his actions and even referred to his first victim, the late fashion editor Jane Larkworthy, as “evil incarnate.”

While incarcerated, Braunstein made headlines for his attempts to access banned books and materials, including kidnapping victim Jaycee Dugard’s autobiography and books on the minds of sexual predators. He also sued prison officials for denying him access to certain materials and lost a bid to regain possession of seized bondage pornography from his home.

As Braunstein’s parole hearing approaches, victim rights advocates are calling for him to remain behind bars, citing the heinous nature of his crimes and his lack of remorse. Critics of the Parole Board argue that the panel is too lenient in considering the rehabilitation of criminals over the severity of their offenses. Braunstein’s potential release has sparked outrage among those who believe he poses a continued threat to society.

In the midst of this controversy, Braunstein’s future remains uncertain as he awaits his hearing before the Parole Board. The outcome of this hearing will have far-reaching implications for both Braunstein and the victim of his brutal crimes. The world is constantly evolving, and with that evolution comes new challenges and opportunities. As we move into the future, it’s important to stay informed about the latest trends and developments in order to stay ahead of the curve.
