Rene Campos, Convicted Sex Offender, Runs for City Council in Fresno

It’s not often that we see registered sex offenders vying for public office, and for good reason. They lack judgment, are generally unpopular, and should not be entrusted with positions of public trust. Despite these glaring realities, Rene Campos, a convicted sex offender, is running for city council in Fresno.

In 2018, Campos was convicted of possessing child sex abuse materials. Instead of bowing out gracefully, he continues to push forward with his campaign for a council seat, much to the dismay of many.

Recently, Campos held a press conference near a school and a church, causing concern among officials. The Diocese of Fresno released a statement condemning Campos for using the church and school as props in his political theater.

Several individuals and groups have taken action to prevent Campos from holding public office. Fresno City Councilman Miguel Arias proposed an ordinance to ban registered sex offenders from running for council, while Council President Mike Karbassi stated that he would refuse to seat Campos if elected. Additionally, a Merced assemblywoman has introduced statewide legislation to keep sex offenders out of elected positions.

It is clear to almost everyone, except Campos himself, that he is not fit to oversee public safety and other critical functions in a city the size of Fresno. While there is a possibility that Campos has been rehabilitated during his short jail time, his continued poor judgment raises doubts.

Despite his intentions, Campos should reconsider his bid for city council and acknowledge that individuals with his criminal background have no place in elected office. If he truly seeks redemption, there are other ways for him to serve his community.
