Shannon Sharpe has made the difficult decision to step away from his role at ESPN following a recent rape lawsuit filed against him. The Pro Football Hall of Famer announced his temporary departure from the “First Take” desk in order to address what he described as “false and disruptive allegations” made against him by a woman.

In a statement shared on his X page, Sharpe expressed his intention to handle the situation and ultimately return to his position alongside Stephen A. Smith later in the summer, just in time for the start of the NFL preseason. Despite the allegations, Sharpe emphasized that the relationship in question was consensual and maintained his innocence.

The lawsuit, filed by a woman identified as Jane Doe, alleges that Sharpe sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions between October 2024 and January 2025, following a nearly two-year-long relationship. Sharpe, however, has denied any wrongdoing and expressed gratitude for the support he has received from fans during this challenging time.

Sharpe first joined ESPN in 2023 at the invitation of Stephen A. Smith, who recruited him to co-host “First Take.” In February 2024, he signed an extension to continue his role on the program. Despite the legal proceedings, Sharpe appeared on recent episodes of the show without issue.

Following Sharpe’s announcement, an ESPN spokesperson told TMZ Sports that they support his decision to step away from his duties at this time. The network acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and expressed their agreement with Sharpe’s choice to address the allegations before returning to his role.

As Sharpe navigates this difficult situation, fans and colleagues alike are watching closely to see how the legal proceedings unfold and whether he will indeed return to his role on “First Take” as planned. In the meantime, the sports world remains divided as it grapples with the allegations against one of its prominent figures.
