Sri Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne has acknowledged the dominance of Joe Root in the ongoing Test series in England. Root, the former England captain, has been in exceptional form, scoring consistently and leading his team to a 2-0 lead in the series. Karunaratne believes that the key to stopping Root lies in coming up with a solid plan and potentially boring him out.

Root boasts an impressive average of 67.55 against Sri Lanka in 12 Tests, with a total of 1351 runs and six centuries to his name. In the current series, he has scored 42, 62*, 143, and 103 in the first two matches, showcasing his class and skill as a top-order batsman.

In a recent statement to reporters, Karunaratne emphasized the importance of analyzing Root’s past performances to identify his weaknesses and develop a new strategy based on that information. He suggested that being less aggressive and focusing on wearing Root down could be a viable tactic to disrupt his rhythm.

The Yorkshire batter has also been formidable when playing against Sri Lanka in their home conditions. During England’s tour of Sri Lanka in early 2021, Root scored 228 and 186 in Galle, contributing significantly to his team’s series victory.

Karunaratne highlighted the challenges of adapting to foreign conditions, noting that while some players like Kamindu Mendis have excelled, others have struggled. He pointed out that apart from Root, most batters have found it tough to perform in the English conditions, emphasizing the difficulty of facing quality bowling in unfamiliar settings.

The third and final Test of the series is set to commence on September 6 at The Oval, providing Sri Lanka with an opportunity to salvage some pride and end the tour on a positive note.

In conclusion, Karunaratne’s assessment of Root’s impact and the challenges of playing in foreign conditions sheds light on the intricacies of Test cricket and the importance of adaptability and strategy in overcoming formidable opponents. Sri Lanka will need to regroup and come up with a solid game plan to counter Root’s influence and put up a strong fight in the upcoming match.
