The Mumbai Indians (MI) have made a significant move ahead of the IPL 2026 retention deadline by trading in star Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) all-rounder Shardul Thakur. The announcement was made official on Thursday, November 13.

Thakur, who was initially unsold during the IPL 2025 auction, was later picked up by LSG as a replacement player before the season commenced, at his base price of ₹2 crore. Now, he will be donning the Mumbai Indians jersey in the upcoming season after the franchise traded for him in an all-cash deal for his existing player fee.

Having played 10 matches for LSG last season, Thakur showcased his prowess by taking 13 wickets at an average of 28.84 and an economy of 11.02. With a total of 105 matches under his belt in the IPL, Thakur has previously represented Punjab Kings (PBKS), Rising Pune Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He has amassed 107 wickets and scored 325 runs with a half-century at a strike rate of 139.48.

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif shed light on why the Mumbai Indians were keen on acquiring Thakur. Kaif suggested that Mumbai struggled for a consistent third or fourth pacer in their bowling lineup, and Thakur could fill that void. He also mentioned that Thakur’s ability to contribute with the bat could make him a valuable asset as a floater in the batting order.

Representing Mumbai in domestic cricket, Thakur is well-versed with the conditions at the Wankhede Stadium, which could work to his advantage in the upcoming season. His experience and versatility make him a valuable addition to the Mumbai Indians squad.

With this trade, Mumbai Indians have strengthened their pace bowling department and added depth to their batting lineup, making them a formidable force to reckon with in the IPL 2026 season. It will be interesting to see how Thakur performs for his home franchise and contributes to their quest for another IPL title.
