The discovery of perfectly preserved insects and a spider’s web trapped in 112-million-year-old amber in the Amazon rainforest has provided scientists with a unique glimpse into the ancient ecosystem of the region. Xavier Delclòs and his team from the University of Barcelona ventured to the Genoveva quarry in eastern Ecuador in 2022 after hearing about the presence of this rare find.

The amber found at the site is believed to have originated from conifers in the Araucaria family, which thrived in the area when Ecuador was part of the Gondwana supercontinent. While most of the amber at the quarry came from underground sources, the team collected 60 promising pieces of above-ground amber during their initial excavation.

Upon closer examination, more than a third of these amber pieces revealed bio-inclusions such as insects, plant parts, and even a spider’s web dating back to the Cretaceous Period. This discovery marks the first time that Mesozoic amber with insect and spider bio-inclusions has been found in South America, showcasing previously unknown species from this era.

The insects trapped in the amber represent a diverse range of species, including flies, wasps, midges, beetles, and mosquitoes that coexisted with dinosaurs in a humid forest near the equator. Some of these species likely relied on water sources like lakes, rivers, and swamps for their life cycles, indicating a lush and vibrant ecosystem during the Cretaceous Period.

Delclòs speculates that a visit to the site during that time would have required insect repellent and possibly a means of evading carnivorous dinosaurs. The presence of blood-feeding mosquitoes suggests that vertebrates, potentially dinosaurs, were part of their diet. However, the likelihood of extracting dinosaur DNA from the mosquitoes preserved in the amber is slim due to the chemical breakdown of genetic material over time.

While the dream of a real-life Jurassic Park from Cretaceous amber remains elusive with current technology, the discovery of these ancient bio-inclusions offers valuable insights into the biodiversity and ecological dynamics of the Amazon rainforest millions of years ago. This groundbreaking research underscores the importance of amber as a time capsule for understanding Earth’s prehistoric past. In recent years, the rise of social media has drastically changed the way we communicate, connect, and consume information.
