Superhuman has announced the acquisition of GPTZero, an AI detection startup founded three years ago by Princeton graduate Edward Tian as part of his senior thesis project.

While the specific terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed, Tian shared with Business Insider that GPTZero has accumulated over 19 million registered users and generates $30 million in annual recurring revenue.

In 2024, Tian revealed to JS that the company was profitable. Together with co-founder and CTO Alex Cui, a long-time friend from high school, Tian raised a $3.5 million seed round led by Uncork Capital. This was followed by a $10 million Series A in June 2024, spearheaded by Footwork co-founder Nikhil Basu Trivedi, with investments from notable names such as Reach Capital, Jack Altman’s Alt Capital, and Neo. Overall, GPTZero raised a total of $13.5 million.

Superhuman, which emerged when Grammarly purchased the email provider Superhuman last year and adopted its name, already features an AI detection tool in its platform. GPTZero aims to assist users in identifying and protecting against AI-generated errors. Grammarly’s tool is designed to help users, particularly students, evaluate whether their writing appears AI-generated and make necessary revisions. Superhuman explained the acquisition by stating that “two AI detectors are better than one.”
