Tao Kurihara, a designer known for her romantic and whimsical collections, recently showcased her latest designs at the Comme des Garçons HQ in Aoyama. Despite the late season for a collection debut, Kurihara, like her mentor Rei Kawakubo, does not conform to traditional fashion norms. Her collection featured bold shapes, a mix of monochrome and pastel colors, and playful patterns like stripes and gingham.

The show was accompanied by a cheerful folksy soundtrack, setting the tone for the whimsical designs that graced the runway. From oversized skirts to roomy trousers and tiny jackets, Kurihara’s collection seamlessly blended wearable pieces with a touch of fantasy. The gingham skirts, in particular, showcased a faded sepia orange hue, reminiscent of old photographs.

For fans of Comme des Garçons, Tao Kurihara’s collection is a must-shop. The cropped flared jackets with Peter Pan collars, dotty floral dresses, and peasant skirts are just a few of the standout pieces that cater to the brand’s loyal followers. While Kurihara occasionally deviates from the traditional CDG aesthetic, this season she stayed true to her signature style.

One of the highlights of Kurihara’s collection was the use of Fumi Imamura’s floral artworks, featuring scarlet poppies on pouffy sheer skirts and cape-like shirts. The prints exuded a charmingly grannyish vibe, adding a soft and romantic touch to the garments. Kurihara expressed her hope that wearing these pieces would allow the wearer to embody the gentleness and strength of Imamura’s work.

Overall, Kurihara’s collection captures a delicate balance of gentleness and strength. In a world that often overlooks the feminine and flouncy, Kurihara’s designs serve as a reminder of the power that lies within these qualities. With a bold yet balanced approach, Kurihara continues to showcase her mastery in creating pieces that resonate with both the wearer and the viewer.
