The “Big Beautiful Bill” Is Sinking So Republicans Are Demanding The Senate Parliamentarian Be Fired

The Republican Party has reached a level of lawlessness that has rendered it unable to adhere to its own guidelines without devolving into chaos.

Currently, there is significant backlash against the Senate parliamentarian for enforcing the rules surrounding the Senate’s reconciliation process, specifically through a method colloquially known as the Byrd Bath. This process allows the minority party to challenge specific provisions of a bill to ensure compliance with the strict reconciliation rules, which dictate that only budget-related items may be included in the legislation.

Democrats are meticulously dissecting the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” using this Byrd Bath process, much to the chagrin of their Republican counterparts who wish for it to cease.

Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) has voiced strong opposition, urging JD Vance to take action against the parliamentarian:

How is it that an unelected bureaucrat, appointed by Harry Reid over a decade ago, has the power to dictate what can and cannot be included in President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill? The Senate Parliamentarian is not elected and has no accountability to the American public, yet she wields veto power over legislation that has widespread support. It is high time our elected officials reclaim authority.

JD Vance should overrule the parliamentarian and prioritize the will of the people over the procedural maneuvers of a staffer determining the nation’s future.

However, Steube’s suggestion reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of Senate operations. The Vice President’s role is largely ceremonial regarding legislative power, primarily serving as a tiebreaker. Just as Mike Pence could not overturn the 2020 election results, JD Vance does not possess the authority to overturn the parliamentarian’s decisions. Should Republicans wish to contest the parliamentarian’s rulings, they would need to secure a 60-vote majority in the Senate.

In a more radical move, some Republicans are advocating for the outright dismissal of the Senate parliamentarian, revealing a troubling inclination towards disregard for established legislative norms.
