Apple’s New MacBook Neo: The Most Repairable MacBook Yet
Apple’s latest release, the MacBook Neo, is not only the most affordable MacBook to date but also the most repairable MacBook in over a decade, according to a detailed teardown by iFixit, a popular how-to website.
The standout feature highlighted by iFixit is the Neo’s battery. Unlike previous MacBook models where the battery was glued in place, the Neo’s battery is held in by a tray secured with 18 screws. While this may seem like a lot of screws, iFixit believes that screws are a better alternative to adhesive when it comes to repairability. The new battery setup has been met with enthusiasm at the iFixit office, as it promises to make replacing the MacBook battery a much easier task.
In addition to the improved battery design, other changes that contribute to the Neo’s repairability include a flat disassembly tree, compatibility with replacement parts in Repair Assistant, and easier-to-replace components like the display and keyboard.
Despite these enhancements, iFixit still has some reservations about the Neo, such as the soldered RAM and storage. As a result, the Neo received a repairability score of 6 out of 10 from iFixit. However, considering this is a MacBook, iFixit acknowledges that a score of 6 is quite commendable.
