Celebrating Read Across America Day: A Reflection on Literacy and National Identity

On this Read Across America Day, we join forces with countless students, parents, educators, and librarians nationwide to honor the vital role of reading in our homes and the essentiality of literacy within our schools. There’s simply nothing like the thrill of opening a new book—a passport to adventure and enlightenment.

Throughout the last 250 years, the written word has been a catalyst for change, from the provocative pamphlets of Thomas Paine to the enduring insights of The Federalist Papers and the captivating tales of Mark Twain. These words, which once rallied a fledgling Republic towards greatness, continue to resonate, inspiring young minds to shape the future of our Nation.

Reading ignites creativity, cultivates character, and unlocks a realm of possibilities. It empowers the next generation to dream without bounds, think critically, and embrace the belief that their potential is limitless—not just for their own lives, but for the betterment of our country as a whole.

The current administration is steadfast in its dedication to prioritizing students and families in education, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive. In December, the Department of Education allocated $256 million to American schools, aimed at enhancing reading initiatives in classrooms. The premise is simple: strong readers forge strong futures, and our commitment to the well-being of America’s children will not falter.

Today, we urge every American to take a moment to pick up a book, turn its pages, and contribute to the unfolding narrative of our Nation: a new Golden Age for America, one where literacy and learning reign supreme.
