Britt Allcroft, Creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, Passes Away at 81
Britt Allcroft, a renowned British television producer and writer known for her work on the beloved children’s series “Thomas & Friends,” based on “The Railway Series” books, passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 81.
Allcroft’s daughter, Holly Wright, confirmed her mother’s death to the New York Times. Director Brannon Carty also shared the news on X, describing Allcroft as a visionary producer and adoring mother and wife.
Born Hilary Mary Allcroft in 1943, she later adopted the name Britt at the age of 16 as she pursued a career in British television.
Hailing from Worthing, England, Allcroft began her career as a producer on various British television shows in the 1970s, eventually acquiring the rights to “The Railway Series” books, which served as the inspiration for Thomas the Tank Engine.
Allcroft’s fascination with the characters in the book series was sparked during her involvement in a 1979 documentary film about a railway in Sussex, featured in the books. She later co-founded the Britt Allcroft Company with her husband, Angus Wright.
After securing funding for the first 26 episodes of “Thomas & Friends” in 1984, the series gained widespread acclaim and popularity among young audiences worldwide, also being featured in the U.S. through “Shining Time Station.”
Allcroft further contributed to the franchise by writing and directing the 2000 film “Thomas and the Magic Railroad” and voicing the character of Lady. In 2023, she appeared in the documentary “An Unlikely Fandom,” exploring the internet fandom surrounding the “Thomas” series.
“Thomas & Friends” continued to thrive for 27 years, spawning various adaptations, spinoffs, films, and merchandise opportunities, such as “Diesel: Impossible,” “The Looney Diesels,” and “Thomas & Friends ERTL Adventures: The Biggest Christmas Adventure.”
Allcroft is survived by her daughter, son, and grandchildren.
