Truecaller, the popular caller ID app, has finally bridged the gap for iPhone users by introducing real-time caller ID support in its latest update. This feature, previously only available to Android users, is now accessible to iOS subscribers thanks to Apple’s Live Caller ID Lookup feature in iOS 18.

This significant update comes on the heels of Truecaller’s co-founders, Alan Mamedi and Nami Zarringhalam, stepping down from their day-to-day roles in November 2024. With over 2.6 million paying subscribers, Truecaller recognizes the importance of catering to its 750,000 iOS users, who contribute 40% of the company’s revenue. In fact, iPhone subscribers have a 5X higher conversion rate to the premium tier and generate 80% more revenue compared to Android users.

In 2022, Truecaller revamped its iOS app to enhance spam detection capabilities, leveraging Apple’s permission to store a larger database locally. Despite these improvements, the app faced challenges in countries like India, where a new service called Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) threatened to rival Truecaller’s offerings.

To enable real-time caller ID on iOS, Truecaller developed a new server architecture and encrypted database specifically for iPhone users. This innovative approach, known as homomorphic encryption, allows for secure communication between the client and the server without compromising user privacy.

Although there may be occasional delays in retrieving caller information due to the encryption process, overall, the live caller ID feature has been well-received during beta testing. Truecaller’s premium tiers on iOS offer various subscription options, starting at $9.99 per month for individuals and $74.99 per year. Family and Gold plans are also available for those seeking additional features.

Users can easily enable the Live Caller ID Lookup feature through their iPhone settings, with Truecaller planning to introduce image support in caller IDs for iOS users in the near future. This commitment to improving the user experience on iOS showcases Truecaller’s dedication to providing cutting-edge solutions for its global user base.
