Trump Distances Himself from Greene Amid Rising Tensions in MAGA Coalition

In a surprising twist, former President Donald Trump has severed ties with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a key figure in the MAGA movement who has increasingly found herself at odds with the administration on several fronts, including economic policy, international relations, and the controversial case of Jeffrey Epstein.

In a late Friday social media post, Trump labeled Greene a “ranting lunatic,” formally announcing his withdrawal of support for her. “All I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!” he vented on Truth Social.

This public rebuke signifies a significant crack in the MAGA coalition that propelled Trump to the presidency and has facilitated his agenda. Over recent months, this alliance has shown signs of strain, particularly concerning the Epstein files.

Greene has emerged as a vocal critic of Trump, suggesting he should prioritize domestic issues—like the impending expiration of Obamacare subsidies—over foreign engagements. The crux of their disagreement, however, appears to revolve around Epstein. Greene and fellow MAGA supporters have long demanded the release of documents related to the Epstein investigation, a cause Trump seemed to champion until his recent shift in stance.

With Congress poised to vote on legislation aimed at compelling the release of federal Epstein files, Greene claimed that her communication with Trump regarding the sex offender was the catalyst for his outburst. “It’s astonishing really how hard he’s fighting to stop the Epstein files from coming out that he actually goes to this level,” Greene remarked. She further criticized Trump, stating, “Most Americans wish he would fight this hard to help the forgotten men and women of America.”

Her assertion that she does not “worship or serve Donald Trump” reflects a growing sentiment among some factions of the Republican base who feel sidelined by their own party’s leadership.

Trump’s critique of Greene emerges at a delicate time for Republicans, who are grappling with the fallout from a dismal off-season election cycle where Democrats made significant gains, largely by focusing on issues like government shutdowns and affordability. The Democratic party is keen on leveraging this momentum heading into the midterms, hoping to reclaim control of the House.

In his scathing remarks, Trump suggested that a credible Republican challenger in Greene’s Georgia district would earn his endorsement. “I can’t take a ranting Lunatic’s call every day,” he stated, adding that conservative constituents are dissatisfied with her antics.

Trump’s criticisms extend beyond Greene; he has similarly targeted Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who has also called for full disclosure of the Epstein files and advocated for limiting presidential war powers. Last month, Trump encouraged a retired Navy Seal to enter the primary race against Massie, while Sen. Rand Paul has voiced his support for Massie’s campaign.

“Did Thomas Massie, sometimes referred to as Rand Paul Jr., get married already???” Trump quipped on Truth Social. “Boy, that was quick! No wonder the Polls have him at less than an 8% chance of winning the Election.” His comments reflect a growing impatience with those within his party who diverge from his established narrative.
