WASHINGTON — On Friday, the White House unveiled its proposed federal budget for 2027, seeking to reduce spending on the Department of Health and Human Services by over 12%.
This budget closely mirrors the plan put forward by the Trump administration last year. It proposes significant reductions in funding for the National Institutes of Health, the termination of a health research agency, and the establishment of a new entity focused on chronic diseases, named the Administration for a Healthy America.
The president’s budget serves as an agenda-setting tool, outlining the administration’s priorities for the upcoming year. However, it is Congress that holds the power to enact laws determining federal spending.
