The nickname “TACO” appears to fit former President Trump rather well, given his tendency to shy away from pressing issues, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine or navigating complex tariff discussions. As the government shutdown loomed, it was no surprise when the polling data showed that American voters were placing the blame squarely on the shoulders of Trump and the Republican party. It seems the pressure started to build quickly for a way out.

Democrats have offered a potential solution which could serve as an escape route for Republicans and end the impasse surrounding the government shutdown.

To resolve this stalemate, all that Republicans need to do is extend the expiring Obamacare subsidies that are set to lapse at the year’s end.

Trump has effectively faded from public engagement, save for a series of pre-recorded interviews with friendly media faces and his sporadic posts on social media.

Although Trump has been vocal online, the White House’s strategy of punishing blue states by withholding federal funding has backfired; it appears to be solidifying Democratic resolve instead.

The Wall Street Journal reports a worrying trend behind the scenes for the White House:

Advisers express concern that the GOP could be held responsible for the potential expiration of healthcare subsidies, resulting in higher healthcare costs for millions just ahead of the midterm elections next year.

Inside the walls of the White House, aides are weighing proposals to prolong the temporary subsidies linked to the Affordable Care Act, though Trump has yet to give his thumbs-up to such a plan.

Notably, Republicans have insisted that negotiations with Democrats will only start once the government has reopened.

This internal conflict sharply contrasts with the outward bravado exuded by the president and his closest advisors.

The WSJ highlighted that of the 75 congressional districts with at least 10% of their populations using the ACA, a staggering 62 of them lean Republican.

In essence, Trump has maneuvered himself into a corner, and as we’ll discuss further, the repercussions may not be trivial.
