Donald Trump Threatens Panama Canal Seizure Over Chinese Influence
Former President Donald Trump has issued a warning to the Panamanian government, stating that the United States could reclaim control of the Panama Canal if certain conditions are not met. Trump’s message, posted on Truth Social, emphasizes the importance of maintaining the canal’s operations and reducing Chinese influence.
In his statement, Trump expressed the United States’ vested interest in the Panama Canal’s secure and efficient functioning. He reminded Panama that the canal was originally a symbol of cooperation between the US and Panama, not a tool for other nations’ benefit.
“If the principles of this cooperative agreement are not upheld, the United States will demand the return of the Panama Canal without hesitation. Panama must adhere to the terms set forth for the canal’s operation,” Trump declared.
Highlighting the canal’s significance to America’s economy and national security, Trump emphasized its role in facilitating commerce and naval operations. He underscored the history of the canal’s construction, which involved significant sacrifices from American workers.
Trump’s message also criticized Panama for allegedly imposing exorbitant fees on US vessels passing through the canal. He condemned what he described as unfair treatment of American interests and pledged to address the issue promptly.
“The exploitation of our country through excessive charges must cease immediately. The Panama Canal was entrusted to Panama for management, not for profit at America’s expense,” Trump stated.
While Panamanian officials have yet to respond to Trump’s ultimatum, the seriousness of the situation is evident given the canal’s vital role in the country’s economy. Trump’s previous interactions with Panamanian leaders, including former President Juan Carlos Varela, have centered on the canal’s history and significance.
During a meeting with Varela, Trump acknowledged America’s role in constructing the canal, expressing pride in the project’s success. Varela humorously referenced the canal’s century-old origins, to which Trump reaffirmed the US’s contribution to its development.
“The Panama Canal is a remarkable achievement, and we played a significant part in its creation,” Trump remarked during the meeting.
