Tumblr Faces Backlash Over Automated Flagging Issues

In recent days, Tumblr users have been up in arms over the platform’s automated flagging system that has been erroneously marking content as “mature,” even when it clearly isn’t. This has resulted in a decrease in visibility for many users, as those who have set their preferences to hide mature content are missing out on posts that have been wrongly flagged.

Users have reported that a wide range of content, from harmless cat GIFs to innocent fan art, has been targeted by the automated system. Some suspect that AI-based automation may be at the root of the problem, similar to recent issues faced by other social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram.

While Pinterest attributed its user bans to an internal error and Instagram remained tight-lipped about its mass ban troubles, Tumblr has acknowledged that the flagging issue is linked to an update on its Android app. The company is experimenting with enhancements to its mature content filtering systems, including new moderation features like Content Labels.

A Tumblr spokesperson stated that the experiments are ongoing and will be refined based on user feedback before being rolled out to other platforms. The company is committed to making Tumblr a safer space for all users while respecting a diverse range of interests and content preferences.

On its blog, Tumblr addressed the incorrectly flagged posts and stated that it was actively working to address the classification issues. The appeal process is also being updated to handle a higher volume of cases in the coming weeks.

While the exact cause of the flagging issues remains unclear, the reduced staffing at Tumblr following its acquisition by Automattic in 2019 may have contributed to the problem. Layoffs and reassignments within the company have led to operational changes, including the migration of Tumblr’s backend to WordPress to streamline management and address financial losses.
